SRDN. This is the name given by Phoenicians to Sardinia, as testified by the Nora Stone.
The peculiar geographic location of the island, at the centre of the Mediterranean’s maritime routes and its richness in mineral deposits soon began to attract Phoenician navigators towards the Sardinian coasts.
At the end of the 8th century B.C. the pre-colonisation stage was over and a real colonisation stage started. From mid-9th century to mid-7th century B.C. large Phoenician centres were founded in Sardinia, e.g. Cagliari, Nora, Tharros, Sulcis, Monte Sirai, Bitia.
Lying at the centre of the routes between the East and the Western colonies, Phoenician Sardinia represents a successful synthesis of an architectural, urban, artistic and cultural coexistence of the elements of archaic Eastern Mediterranean settlements with those of the Western colonies located between Carthage and Spain.
